What is special about our Balcony Tomato?

Most tomatoes grow large and high and you have to tie them up, for example to a climbing frame or a wigwam made of bamboo sticks.

A balcony or balcony tomato remains much lower: the stems remain shorter. That's why they don't need a climbing frame and you only give them some support if they're carrying tomatoes.

You also do not have to remove the side branches. After all, you want a beautiful shrub to develop.

Sow and grow balcony tomatoes

Tomatoes are real summer vegetables. The seeds germinate between 15 and 20°C. The seedlings are also very sensitive to lower temperatures. That's why you sow them indoors from the end of March to mid-April. You put the propagated plant outside around May 20 in your container or in an MM-mini.

A balcony tomato needs a lot of nutrition. So give some extra MM nutrition when planting and some more mid-July.

This species grows to around 60 cm high and you do not have to remove the side branches (thieves). When the tomatoes ripen, remove some leaves that hang in front of the tomatoes.

The tomatoes of this shrub tomato first remain green for a long time and then slowly change color to bright red. Then you can pick them.

You can find the step-by-step sowing and growing instructions for Balcony tomatoes in the Easy Vegetable Garden app . There is also a detailed description in the knowledge base.

What do you use balcony tomatoes for?

These tomatoes are tastiest when they are ripe but still firm. If you let them hang too long, they will become soft and mealy. So try it out a bit.

Pick well-ripe tomatoes off the plant: the stem breaks off easily. Or use scissors and cut them off the stalks.

Tomatoes can be used both raw and cooked. They are delicious in salads, sauces, soups and even stir-fries.
